 Karachi: For the first time in NICVD, the technique of implanting stents in the brains of stroke patients will be introduced.

The National Institute of Cardiology (NICVD) has announced for the first time a new technique for the treatment of stroke patients, opening the clogged artery of the affected patient within 4 hours of the stroke attack. Angioplasty-style stents will be inserted for this treatment, which will be introduced for the first time in Pakistan.

In an exclusive interview with the Express Tribune, the head of the hospital, Prof. Nadeem Qamar, said that NICVD faculty specialists offered their services to protect paralyzed patients from lifelong disability while this complex of opening closed arteries of the brain. And the sensitive procedure will only take an hour. He said that a very complex procedure will be performed in the style of angioplasty under the supervision of specialists for inserting stents in the brain after which the process of disability in paralyzed patients will end.

Prof. Nadeem Qamar said that after a stroke, patients are forced to live a life of disability, but experts from the National Institute of Cardiology have decided that patients who have a stroke and that patient within 4 hours Upon arrival at the hospital, a stent will be inserted to open the blocked artery in his brain, after which the stroke patient will be able to lead a normal life.

Giving good news to the Pakistani nation, Prof. Nadeem Qamar said that the hospital has also started preparations for heart transplantation from next year. In this regard, the law on post-mortem organ donation has already been passed by the Senate. The name of this law is The Transplantation of Human Organ & Tissue Act 2010. The ordinance was issued in 2007 under former President Pervez Musharraf. Later in 2010 it was passed unanimously by the National Assembly and the Senate. Ali Zardari's signature is present, under this law any human being can donate his organs to another human being. Under this law, the first kidney transplant was performed in SIUT in 1985 which is in progress.

The head of the National Institute of Cardiology said that heart transplants can also be done under the same law, but for this we all have to start an awareness campaign at the national level. Within 6 hours of confirmation of brain death, the heart must be removed and transplanted into another patient. People who are brought to the trauma center after a tragic accident and have no chance of survival are allowed by the relatives of these patients. He said that the initial process of heart transplantation would be started in the next six months at the National Institute of Diseases.

Prof. Nadeem Qamar said that in the first phase, patients with dysfunctional heart will be given a bridge to transplant, ie a mechanical device will be implanted in the heart. During this period, intensive care of the patient will continue. It is called a bridge-to-transplant in medical parlance, followed by a heart transplant a few months later.

Professor Nadeem Qamar, head of the National Institute of Cardiology, said that under the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Act 2010, any person can voluntarily donate any part of his body, including heart transplantation and re-mechanical heart. The work of installing the device is also being started. The work of installing the mechanical device in the hospital was started in 2018, 5 patients were fitted with this device out of which 2 patients are living a healthy life.

Professor Nadeem Qamar said that stroke patients no longer need to worry, in the new year 2021 angioplasty will be started to play with the closed arteries of stroke patients. He said that angioplasty is performed in 16,000 heart patients in the hospital annually with a success rate of 99%.
